Norderney: home of coziness

Christina/ November 16, 2021/ The daily grind, Culture

What more could I want? A short break over my birthday at Norderney with perfect weather. The island, where coziness is at home.

Do you feel the same, that there is nothing better on a murky and stormy november rain day after a stroll to come home and enjoy a warm tee in a cozy atmosphere? If so, Norderney is the place to be for you! The best spot would be the coffeeshop Marienhöhe. For dinner I recommend in any case the “White Dune” (Weiße Düne) to you. This restaurant is not only nicely decorated but offers an excellent cuisine for an unforgettable stay. What else can you experience on Norderney? Read this post!

Happy Birthday from the hotel
We start in the early morning hours towards Norddeich Mole heading for the ferry boat to Norderney. Whereas it rains on the way the sun comes through the clouds at Aurich. We take the 10:30 a.m. ferry and 50 minutes later we are on the island. And we are lucky again, the sun is shining. We walk down the street from the habour to the city centre on our way to the appartment hotel “Haus am Meer”.

Our appartment is not ready yet that’s why we decide to have a look at the beach side. We pass by the Surfcafé, it is packed. We move on and enter the “de Vries”. On the first floor we enjoy both: a prosecco and the magnificent view over the ocean. Afterwards we stroll through the location and take a good look around.

Upon our arrival at the appartment somebody knocks at the door. Oh, it’s a “Happy Birthday greeting” from the hotel, another prosecco for us! We walk to the beach ones more and make it to the Marienhöhe for a nice cup of tea.

For dinner we reserved a table at the Weiße Düne (White Dune). It is already dark outside but quite mild. Therefore we decide to walk the five kilometres to the restaurant. It is a very nice stroll and we get hungry indeed. We arrive at the restaurant where everything is perfect: the cozy atmosphere, the tasty food and the very friendly and attentive waitress. A very special birthday treat to me! And there’s self-made chocolate for desert – simply delicious!

Wadden Sea adé – Light house juche!
Next day we would have like to make a Wadden Sea tour, but there is none this weekend. Instead we take a walk to the Lighthouse. That’s how we get to know the Norderney Wadden Sea and it corresponding protected landscape with bird watching.

On our way to the Lighthouse we take a look at the “airport” of the island and watch one, two private jets taking off. We move and debark once more at the “White Dune”, this time making use of the wonderful outoor terrace. Afterwards we go back through the dunes back to the North-Beach. We want to see the dunes at daylight. A really nice walk.

The long way to the wreck
On our last day on the island we are in for another highlight: the hike alongside the beach to the wreck on the other side. And I have to admit: this hike is quite something! It is a pretty stormy and cloudy day, but it is dry though. We start at the Weiße Düne towards the end of the island. This is about 10 km, not a big thing. But, you have to walk on sand and your feet will sink in on every step!

Möwendune and Postbake
We plan our way back through the dunes. At first we are surprised by the big puddle of waters around us. However over the time the way gets inaccessible more and more. Finally we spot a man moving towards to us. The guy hold his shoes and socks in his hands. With this weather? Is that a special programme? We talk to the guy and get to know that we have to walk through knee-high water if we want to continue on this way. Well, we take a look at each other knowing we don’t want to. We decide to walk back on the beach.

You might guess it already: Yes, we do spent our last evening at the Weiße Düne!
