The Greek Island Crete is the fifth largest island after Sicilia, Sardinia, Cypress and Corsica. In my opinion four things are characteristic for the isle: deep gorges, tors, hidden bays and wonderful cloisters. Crete is suitable for hiking trips. However cultural treasures and city highlights can also be found. We sat our camp in the city of Rethymno. It is the third largest city of the island. However, as the south of Crete is especially nice for hiking, the city of Chania might be the better choice.

Both, Chania and Rethymno have harbours build in Venecian times. The harbour of Chania on the northwest coast of Crete has a really impressive setting. My hint: Enjoy an Aperol Spritz at the harbour just around sunset. It magical.

I have written down my hiking tips in a separate blog article. Hiking on Crete is something for every taste. The proverbial hospitality of the Cretan does one’s bit.
