Visiting the Fünfseenland

Christina/ November 14, 2021/ The daily grind, Culture

This is the deal: With a short break at the Ammersee you get another four lakes for free. Where? At the so called “Five lakes district” in Bavaria. Both, mountain and water fans get one’s money’s worth here. And also on the physical well-being is taken care for. My recommendation: the restaurant Steg 32.

Four days in Paradise
Allowedly: the drive from Germany’s north to the Five-Lakes-District is not a stone’s throw. We are lucky to arrive at sunset down there. “Wow” is all we can say and think upon the look onto the Ammersee. We catch dream weather this day. On our way we had fog but here the sun is beaming down from a pure blue sky and a good-humoured party scene is around us. After a short stroll around the lake we instantly find “our” drink hut and sit with two good drinks in our hands at the bank of the lake. We think this can’t get better – but it can.

The monastery Andechs
Right on the next day a dream of my youth becomes reality: we hike to the monastery of Andechs. In my teenage years the brown ale from Andechs was a cult drink before we spend a visit to the local discotheque. At that time a friend of mine and me always dreamt of visiting the monastery brewery of Andechs. Unfortunately it never happened. I had to wait for 34 years to go there. But, the waiting was worth it. As generally known there is sweat before the reward and therefore we combine the adventure with a hike through the golden autumn forest.

We start at the subway station of Herrsching and walk down the Seestraße towards Seefeld. There we pay a visit to the castle and take a good look around before we vanish into the forest direction of monastery Andechs. Thereby we circle the Pilsensee, the second one of the five lake district.

We walk alongside a brook, we bushwack and there it is: my place of longing from my teenage days. The sight could not be more Bavarian: steel blue sky, sunshine, a Bavarian church and good beer. The monastery tavern is packed. Sure, we are not the only ones who loves beer and Brezn. After an ample sunbath on the terrace and a proper refreshment we walk back to Herrsching through the beautiful Kiental. And here are the news: we witness an even more beautiful sunshine than the day before. Is that possible at all?

The pfiffiga Beppi on the arm
We decide on the lounge of the restaurant Steg 32. From here we enjoy a magnificent view onto the lake and the breathtaking play of colours of the sun, the more it sinks into the water. It is chilly by now and therefore we treat ourselves with a warm blanket and a “pfiffiga Beppi” to heat us up. This Beppi is a Bio-herbal tea with Ginger-Orange-cinnamon taste and is very delicious.
