Around Lonau: Capercaillies, Beech Forests, and Mountain Meadows
It’s not exactly easy to find new hiking trails in the Harz region. But we’ve managed to do it again. The spring sun and the wonderful air are drawing us to Lonau this time. You might not know it, but you should! It’s located near Herzberg and has quite a bit to offer along the way “Around Lonau”: a capercaillie observation enclosure, a covered bridge, mountain meadows, and beautiful beech forests. To wrap up the day, I recommend a trip to Buntenbock to Café Glücksmoment. It delivers on its promises!
Fishing Prohibited
Our starting point is the Kirchtal parking lot, a bit outside of Lonau. From here, we first head along a small asphalt road towards three ponds filled with plenty of trout. But be careful: a sign claims that fishing is prohibited here. Well, two families seem to see it differently on-site. Along the Große Lonau, which meanders cheerfully through the beech forest, we reach the Kneipp water-treading facility. However, it’s without water. Still, it’s a lovely spot here. Just behind the health pool, we head right up into the forest. We keep passing benches that are supposed to offer beautiful views.
Three Naked People in the Garden?
The wonderful view of Lonau doesn’t come until a bit later. First, we pass the forest swimming pool and get to walk over a covered bridge. This is likely part of the village beautification – well, the investment has paid off here. We go uphill again, back into the forest. At a cell tower, it’s finally time. A little further down, in the middle of a meadow, we discover a bench that offers us a breathtaking view, not only of the village but also of three ladies who are quite lightly dressed, basking in the sun. From up here, we also have a nice view of the brick church of Lonau, named St. Michaelis.
Capercaillie Observation Enclosure
Just a few meters further, we reach the capercaillie observation enclosure. Unfortunately, the animals are quite shy and stay in the background. But we do earn a special stamp for our visit! After this short cultural interlude, we continue on the hiking trail. We pass a pavilion and catch another fantastic view of Lonau. Then we slowly head downhill. We are back at the Lonau. Over a very beautiful narrow forest path, past a few yellow winter aconites, we make our way back. Once again, we go uphill a bit, and we are high above Lonau again. Where the water flows down the slopes, moss has gathered on the stones. We enjoy the great view over the Kirchtal one last time until we reach the parking lot of the same name.
Café Glücksmoment
Unfortunately, we don’t find any opportunity in Lonau to conclude our outing with a nice coffee. We quickly ask Uncle Google, who recommends a café called Glücksmoment in Buntenbock. Sounds tempting! So, we hop in the car and head to Buntenbock. Upon arrival, we experience a pleasant surprise. We are welcomed by a truly lovingly decorated café with homemade dishes and delicious coffee. It goes without saying that I opted for the ladies’ set again!
