Bare ground, dead trunks, endless desolation. If you\u2019ve ever wondered what a mix of the Harz Mountains and the Atacama Desert feels like \u2014 here you go.<\/p>\n I felt like I had stepped straight into the desert scene from *James Bond: Quantum of Solace*. Just without Bond, without the Aston Martin, and unfortunately without the dramatic soundtrack.<\/p>\n Instead: sun, dust, skeletons of trees, and that quiet question in the back of your mind: *Was this really meant to be a nature experience?*<\/p>\n The destination \u2014 the **wildcat enclosure at Marienteichbaude** \u2014 is definitely worth seeing. The wildcats are fascinating, elegant, and seem noticeably more relaxed than the hikers who have just survived the \u201cBond stage\u201d of the trail.<\/p>\n And one thing you absolutely shouldn\u2019t miss is the **wildcat feeding session**: it takes place four times a day \u2014 at **11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m.** We arrived just in time for the 1 p.m. feeding and got to watch the spectacle up close. The undisputed star of the afternoon was a wildcat named **Carlo** \u2014 a true tomcat, or *Kuder* in hunters\u2019 terminology. With an efficiency that would make any fast-food champion jealous, Carlo devoured a dead chick in exactly **two bites**. Two. Bites. And the best part? Right afterward, he looked around with a mix of astonishment and innocent expectation, as if he hadn\u2019t been fed in days. Much of the landscape feels bleak and heavily deforested. We quickly agreed that we did *not* want to hike back along the same \u201cdesert trail\u201d and started looking for another option. A signpost right at Marienteichbaude pointed to hiking trail **19E**, supposedly leading back to Bad Harzburg in 5.3 kilometers. Sounded promising. Unfortunately, we couldn\u2019t find that trail at all and eventually ended up trudging back through the same wasteland, somewhat discouraged.<\/p>\n Good thing the last two kilometers are idyllic again \u2014 otherwise, we might have remembered the whole tour a lot less fondly \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n My honest tip for hiking enthusiasts:<\/strong> Unless, of course, you\u2019re in the mood for a little post-apocalyptic cinema and want to feel like 007 on a secret mission through the Harz version of the Atacama.<\/p>\n Final verdict:<\/strong>
