Between Himmelsthür and Giesener Teiche

Christina/ March 24, 2022/ The daily grind

I like Hildesheim and its environment consistently better. I have been to this area several times during Corona. For example, I visited the Hildesheimer Wald and the beautiful Tosmarkamm. This time we are about to walk along the river „Innerste“ and the Giesener Teiche. We are especially surprised by the landscape around the nature reserve „Giesener Teiche“. Between the grassy hills it feels like being in the Scottish Highlands.

Knocking on heaven’s door
We start our tour at the district Himmelsthür. Despite the name we do not come across any cosmic creatures or angels. From the bus stop „Salzwiese“ we walkt to the memorial park. From here we use a path until we reach the Innerste wedlands under the Mastberg. This part is really idyllic. We walk criss-cross through the Haseder Busch, partly along the Innerste, partly through the brushwood and come across a field with blooming snowflakes. On a bench, which stands in the sun, we take a break. I close my eyes and enjoy the warm sun beams on my face and forget about the world around me – at least for a couple of minutes.

In the Highlands of Hildesheim
From the Haseder Busch we walkt to the next nature reserve, the Giesener Teiche. The more we dip into the area, the more we are fascinated by it. I did not expect anything special and I am thus surprised by the beauty. It feels like moving in the Scottish Highlands. Today’s nature reserve used tob e a military training ground for German and British troops in the 1990ies.

From Osterberg to Ahnekamp
We leave the Giesener Teiche and move on towards the Osterberg. From the top of the hill we enjoy a magnificent view onto Hildesheim and its environment. We follow the narrow and forested way and start our return to Himmelsthür.
