Wildcat Trail Bad Harzburg: Between Fairytale Forest and James Bond Post-Apocalyptic Scenery
There are hiking trails that sound like pure adventure. And then there’s the **Wildcat Trail near Bad Harzburg** — the kind of trail that instantly makes you think of silent paws, mysterious forests, and that romantic feeling of locking eyes with a wildcat at any moment, gazing into its amber-colored eyes. The reality? Well… let’s just say: mixed.
The hike starts at the large parking lot in Bad Harzburg — which, by the way, has been charging a fee for some time now. A small reminder that the adventure starts demanding its tribute before you even take your first step.
The first two kilometers? Absolutely beautiful!
A wonderful forest path: shady, green, branches cracking under your boots, birdsong included. Exactly the kind of start that makes you think: *Yes! This is why I laced up my hiking boots!* And then… the break happens.
Suddenly, the forest idyll ends, and for a full **5.3 kilometers**, the Wildcat Trail turns into something resembling a post-apocalyptic tree desert. Bare ground, dead trunks, endless desolation. If you’ve ever wondered what a mix of the Harz Mountains and the Atacama Desert feels like — here you go.
I felt like I had stepped straight into the desert scene from *James Bond: Quantum of Solace*. Just without Bond, without the Aston Martin, and unfortunately without the dramatic soundtrack.
Instead: sun, dust, skeletons of trees, and that quiet question in the back of your mind: *Was this really meant to be a nature experience?*
The destination — the **wildcat enclosure at Marienteichbaude** — is definitely worth seeing. The wildcats are fascinating, elegant, and seem noticeably more relaxed than the hikers who have just survived the “Bond stage” of the trail.
And one thing you absolutely shouldn’t miss is the **wildcat feeding session**: it takes place four times a day — at **11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m.** We arrived just in time for the 1 p.m. feeding and got to watch the spectacle up close. The undisputed star of the afternoon was a wildcat named **Carlo** — a true tomcat, or *Kuder* in hunters’ terminology. With an efficiency that would make any fast-food champion jealous, Carlo devoured a dead chick in exactly **two bites**. Two. Bites. And the best part? Right afterward, he looked around with a mix of astonishment and innocent expectation, as if he hadn’t been fed in days. As if to say: *“Wait… that was it already?”* Fascinating, impressive — and somehow oddly relatable.
And how do you get back?
That’s where the problem starts: the surrounding area in the western Harz around Torfhaus currently offers very few appealing alternatives if you’re looking for varied, green return routes. Much of the landscape feels bleak and heavily deforested. We quickly agreed that we did *not* want to hike back along the same “desert trail” and started looking for another option. A signpost right at Marienteichbaude pointed to hiking trail **19E**, supposedly leading back to Bad Harzburg in 5.3 kilometers. Sounded promising. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find that trail at all and eventually ended up trudging back through the same wasteland, somewhat discouraged.
Good thing the last two kilometers are idyllic again — otherwise, we might have remembered the whole tour a lot less fondly 😉
My honest tip for hiking enthusiasts:
👉 Enjoy the first two kilometers of forest magic.
👉 Go for the wildcat experience.
👉 And take the rest comfortably by car or bus.
Unless, of course, you’re in the mood for a little post-apocalyptic cinema and want to feel like 007 on a secret mission through the Harz version of the Atacama.
Final verdict:
The Wildcat Trail has its strong moments — but also some very long dry stretches.
In the most literal sense of the word.
