Bicycle tour: At Lehre only emptiness

Christina/ October 19, 2021/ The daily grind

Driving into space was not what we expected from this tour. A bicycle tour through nature was promised to us but turned out to be wishful thinking only. Fortunately I took care of a rest stop previously. The Müllerhaus-Café at the windmill of Wendhausen makes our day.

Lehre: experience nature
The forecast for this saturday promises dry but chilly weather. On the internet I came across a tour suggestion around lehre which is supposed to be nature-oriented and shall guide us to protected areas which we do not know yet. But sometimes things turn out to be other than expected.

We start our tour at Braunschweig at the Ringgleis and use country roads to reach Wendhausen and later on Lehre. The cycle tour is meant to start at the town hall of Lehre. And this is already where the hard part starts. We read the first sentence of the description time and time again. And even though I know the sports field between Lehre and Groß Brunsrode, we cannot find the amphibian protection fencing at the K35. Well, maybe it is only temporary?

We decide to go to Groß Brunsrode and turn right towards Flechtorf, as advised. We leave the cylcle path on the right hand side – also as described. Once again we do not think that we really reached the protected area “Köterkamp”. At the end of the country road we turn right and then turn left. We reach a partly fenced area which can however be entered.

“There is not way out”
We follow the way until we reach grassland. Well, where does this path continue? We see a guy standing next to his car at at crossing. He looks a little bit helpless and stares a little bit morose at us. For a moment we are not sure whether he is the owner of place and wants us to leave. He says: “There is not way out here. I am stuck with my car.” He asks us where we are up to, if it’s Flechtorf. We nod. He points to an imaginary trail crossing the meadow. We shall follow the lane.

We give it a try. Somehow the trails went cold. We have to stop and go back. We walk through the wet grass. Great, wet shoes and feet. We push our bikes back to where we came from.

We go back to the street. Upon driving past we meet the car driver again. He smiles at us amazed and asks why we return. We turn right into a country road but doubt that this will lead us somewhere. We go back once more. The car driver sees us again. “Where are you going? Do you know that?” We don’t feel like talking and therefore just answer: “Nowhere special.” He looks totally puzzled by now.

The Müllerhaus-Café – our sheet anchor
Upon this cold and damp weather we do not feel like experimenting any more. We go back to Lehre and then to Wendhausen. Close to the windmill is the Müllerhaus-Café, a very nice and cosy place. We indulge ourselves in some coffee and cake and warm up again. The service is very friendly and attentively.

We use our stay to plan the way back. We cycle into direction of Essehof and turn right into the forest to Volkmarode. At the end of the forest we enjoy a wonderful sunset over Braunschweig. Passing by Riddagshausen we reach our starting point. In spite of everything we liked the 50 km tour.
