Oderwald, this time romanticized

Christina/ March 6, 2022/ The daily grind

Somehow I never got close to the Oderwald on the one hand. On the other hand I still visited the forest time after time. And then this Saturday was supposed to be romantic after all? Well, it is Saturday before Valentine’s day on Monday. I prepare myself for it. How? You know by a romantic tour through the Oderwald.

Walking in Ötzi’s footsteps?
February 12th is a really frosty day. Even though the sun is shining, it does not warm us yet. Shivering with the cold we start our tour. I am already very excited whether we will get lost again. The start of the tour is already known to me. But after a while we walk cross-country. Can we make it? The low temperature and the frosty wind made skating rinks out of the ponds. That means the soil is not only muddy but slippery as well. But and that is the interesting part the ice makes footsteps visible. I simply imagine that Ötzi passed by. Upon this adventurous thought my pulse quickens and I get warmer. Slowly the sun rises and the tempertures as well.

You and your living doll
Then it’s due, we reach the most romantic waypoint of the Oderwald. Here we are friendly asked not to scribe our names into the tree bark. Why should we? We know our names! I wonder wheter the scribing of names into the tree bark is as plaguing as the fixing of safety locks onto bridges? We are smiling and move on deeper into the Oderwald. After a while we bump into a landmark. Once again it is a marker between the duchy of Brunswieck and the kingdom of Hannover.

Fitness trail in the forest
Later on we cross the fitness trail of the Oderwald. The signs are yellowed and thus hard to read. But how useful it is that we come across a loo. I wonder however what is the meaning of the graven heart in the middle of the wooden door?

Let the corks pop
At the end of our tour we pass by a perceived party location in the forest. At least the respectable amount of crown caps points to that idea. Maybe it is a unwanted legacy? Once again it makes us smile. It’s simply due to Corona, where you have to party where nobody will notice it.

Meanwhile we are on the home straight. And yes, thank’s to our GPS everything turned out fine. This time we overcame the intertwined and hidden paths of the Oderwald.
