Autumn hike on the Heeseberg

Christina/ October 19, 2021/ The daily grind

Autumn has arrived. The leaves are turning slowly but surely into the most beautiful colours. Outside a fresh wind is blowing, the days are short and grey. Despite that there are always worthwhile places of excursions, even though the walks are shorter due to the early sunset. This sunday we head again to the Heeseberg. I visited this place this spring for the blooming of the adonis. The height near Schöningen is also worth a visit in autumn.

Deers on a sunday excursion
The place Dobbeln is our starting point. We leave it in direction of Jerxheim and have to walk alongside the street for a while bevor we turn right into a country road. The place seems to be a hideaway for deers. At least ten of them are bopping around here.

Over the fields we reach the Siedlung am Heeseerg. Next to some funny lawn gnomes we come across walnut trees and feast on the delicious fruits. Then we go up to the Heeseberg. We walk towards the Heesebergturm and climb onto it, in order to enjoy panoramic sight onto the colouring of the leaves.

After the descent we are looking forward to a coffee break at the restaurant Heese 5. Well, it is not meant to be. There is a sign saying: “private function today.” Oh, that’s too bad. What a pity. We learn that an elderly lady is celebrating her 91st birthday today. We don’t begrudge her the pay rise: on the contrary.

We are ready for the descent to Jerxheim. We make a stop at the Heesehof and buy some cheese from in-house production. We walk through the place. At the end of the village we pass by a garden with blooming sunflowers. I did not know that they have so many different colours.

Sweet rascals on the street
Just some metres behind Jerxheim we encounter a farm. Some pumpkins catch our eyes. They look strange, like snakes. Accidentally the owners come out of the house and explain to us what’s the matter with these bizarre fruits. Then the couple advises the apple and pear trees down the street and let us know that the pears are especially tasty. We collect some of them.

Back at the car we drive to Lucklum. The manor has a nice café, it is called “GutsCafé”. After bolstering ourselves up for the rest of the day we see a sign telling us that the manor’s chapel is open today. What an opportunity. The chapel is really something special and a good place to get married – for my taste.
